"Jesus went through all the towns and villages, teaching in their synagogues,
preaching the good news of the kingdom and healing every disease and sickness.
When he saw the crowds, he had compassion on them, because they were harassed
and helpless, like sheep without a shepherd. Then he said to his disciples,
'The harvest is plentiful but the workers are few'" (Matthew 9:35-38)
In response to the desperate need for more gospel workers, Fowey Parish Church has
an opportunity for one apprentice each year to come and receive some ministry
training, as part of the 9:38
movement. The placement lasts 12 months, and involves three main aspects:
Biblical and Theological Training
One third of the programme is based around Biblical and theological training.
This includes guided input, study and reading and a weekly training afternoon with the
vicar for which preparation will be required. It also includes a number of conferences
during the year.
There is also a further session of training in conjunction with other church members.
These sessions focus on ministry skills, on understanding and handling the Bible, and
on understanding biblical theology and the way it should shape our lives.
Ministry Training and Involvement
Another third of the time is spent in ministry training and experience. The
main responsibility is working with young people at the local primary school and
community college.
Practical Service
The final third of the time involves training and involvement in practical service.
This part of the scheme chiefly involves undertaking practical, physical and administrative
tasks that help the church run.
